A self-contained, high
performance device for use in detecting large and small
underwater objects
DLS-1 is a hand-held sonar effective in detecting sunken vesels, lost equipment, downed aircraft, and other submerged objects. This compact, light-weight unit can be operated by a diver using one hand. It features a pole-mount interface, as well, for over-the-side operations aboard ships and small launches. The unit functions to dephs of 91 meters (300 feet) and has an operating range in excess of 2,000 meters (2,180 yards0. It has both active and passive models of detection. The DLS-1 employs a sophisticated transducer design with broad bandwidth and narrow bean characteristics. The broad bandwidth generates improved range detection in the active mode (CTFM, Continuous Transmission Frequency Modulated signals). In the passive mode, the bandwidth facilitates operation with a greater number of pingers types. The narrow bandwidth enables the operator to determine target azimuth with greater precision. Operation For both active and passive models of operation, an operator detects bearing to the target/pinger by sweeping the DLS-1`s narrow bean trought the search area or column of interest. The DLS-1 is pointed directly at the target/pinger when the headset signal is strongest. A control setting enables a diver to adjust the volume to a confortable level. Operator controls are located on the rear housing panel ( photo, back page). |
