Diver's Locator Sonar

DLS-1 Operator Controls

Active, Passive Modes

The DLS-1 has both an active, echo locator mode and a passive, pinger locator mode of operation.

In the Active Mode, the DLS-1 continuously transmits a frequency modulated (CTFM) narrow beam acoustic signal to determine the range(s) to reflective targets. The divers hears a beat tone in his headphones. This tone is proportional to range because it is the difference between instantaneous transmit frequency  and the frequency of the received echo; decreasing tones equal decreasing ranges. The diver determines the direction of the peak amplitude indicate the target direction. The FUNCTION knob sets the period of the CTFM sweep for 20, 60, or 120 meter ranges.

In the Passive Mode (PASS on the FUNCTION knob), the DLS-1 operates as a pinger locator. In this receive -only mode, the unit converts pinger frequencies to audible tones in the diver`s headphones. The wide bandwidth of the receiver (a characteristic of the  CTFM design) permits operation with pingers transmitting over a 24 to 45 KHZ band.

The diver can tune the receiver with the FREQ ADJ knob to discriminate amongst several pingers. the DLS-1 is sensitive- it can locate a commonly- available type pinger, the 39KHZ, at more than 2,000 meters (2,180 yards) using an omni-directional pattern; 150 dB/ /mPa @ 1m.

Batteries

The DLS-1 uses high capacity, lead acid batteries which will last longer than eight hours in the active mode,110 meter range (120 yds). Longer life is available in the passive mode. The unit can be stored in a charged condition; ready for immediate use without the risk of battery damage or memory effects. The recahrging time is less than two hours.

Rugged Construction

The DLS-1 exceeds U.S. Military Standart 810 shock and vibration requirements. A rugged, polycarbonate housing withstands the dangers of shipboard handling and chemical exposure. All connectors are self-purging and underwatter-pluggable, and all controls can be operated with gloved hands.

Complete Support

The sonnar come in a reinforced, padded carrying case complete with a flotation collar, compass,  earphones, skull cap, and universal imput battery charger.

Optional accessories include a Y-cable and earphones to permit live training of a second diver.

Caravan International conducts periodic operator and maintenance training courses and can schedule on-site courses for multiple users.
